Kidney failure or kidney disease can be a debilitating and life-altering condition, but dialysis is a medical procedure that can help patients live longer, healthier lives.

What Is It?dialysis

Dialysis is a medical treatment that uses a machine to filter and clean the blood of a person whose kidneys are not functioning properly. There are two main types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Types

Hemodialysis involves using a machine to filter the blood outside of the body. A small amount of blood is removed from the patient’s vein, passed through a filter in the dialysis machine, and then returned to the patient’s body through another vein. This treatment is typically done in a hospital or dialysis center and takes several hours to complete.

Peritoneal dialysis involves using the lining of the patient’s abdomen (called the peritoneum) as a natural filter. A sterile solution called dialysate is instilled into the patient’s abdomen through a small tube, and it absorbs waste products and excess fluids from the blood. The used dialysate is then drained out of the body through the same tube. Peritoneal dialysis can be done at home and can be more flexible in terms of scheduling.

Continuous renal replacement therapy is typically used for individuals with acute kidney failure. A machine passes the blood through a filter that removes waste products and water. The blood is returned to the body, along with replacement fluid. This procedure is performed 12 to 24 hours a day, generally every day.

Why Is Dialysis Necessary?

Dialysis is a medical treatment that performs some of the functions of the kidneys when they are not working properly. It is necessary when a person’s kidneys are unable to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood effectively. This can be due to a variety of reasons, such as kidney failure, acute kidney injury, or severe kidney damage.

Dialysis is necessary because the kidneys play a vital role in maintaining the body’s balance of electrolytes, removing waste products and excess fluids from the blood, and regulating blood pressure. When the kidneys are not working properly, these functions are not carried out effectively, leading to a buildup of toxins and fluids in the body. This can lead to serious health problems, including heart problems, anemia, high blood pressure, and nerve damage.

While it is not a cure for kidney disease, it can significantly improve a person’s quality of life and extend their lifespan.
